Chemical process calculations and material balance have a very interesting relationship. The goal of the industry is to have the material that you want to sell. From there, we generate our incomes and the capability of the company to grow, to increase, and to help the world have a better quality of life. But in chemistry and in the chemical processes, it is a very singular one, because of course, the mass balance is law in the world, so it’s not possible to have no mass balance, but the material is different after it pass the process. In Chemistry we convert the identity of the material. Molecules are like small balls moving in your tank. When you perform a chemical process, you are re-organizing the material in a different way: sometimes you add 5 moles and after that you have only 2 moles, but you continue to have the same weight.
Of the 2 moles you obtain, one will be good for you and the second one may not be. It’s another phenomena that you need to consider. It’s very important to generate our material balance and the only way to do it is by calculation according to chemical process law. So, these 5 moles I had before that, compared to 2 moles, that one is good for me and another one is bad for me, have the same total mass but the only way to know it is a to respect the chemical law and incorporate to the general mass balance law.
The chemical process calculation is a derivation of the material balance. In all the moles and material balance, you know how much material you feed and how much material you get. It is very simple, because you’re only mixing them, but the identity of the material is not changing. When we talk about chemical process calculation, it is not enough to know what you feed is what you get. You know that internally you have some relationship that will generate the same quantity of output, but only part of it is good for you and that is a chemical law. So this is the main important point that we need to connect. The chemical process calculations are specific for the general material balance, but my goal in the industry is to generate the material that I’m interested in while respecting the chemical laws.
So, here there are no synonyms. There is no one similar to the other one, no. We need to include other laws that are coming from the chemical processes. In the chemical industry it is very simple because we know the relationship between the materials; for example, how many moles from one side will give me how many moles on the other side. When we talk about biotechnology, it has a completely different history. We’re generating some material by using microorganisms and, therefore, we need to provide them all the materials to live. This case is more complicated; not only chemical laws but biological laws also require consideration when determining the material balance. But by the end, we are selling material and we’re generating materials, and we need to have a so many incomes to justify and grow. And so my benefits in this operation in order to continue to generate more products and continue to improve the level of life in the world.
